Steps to Perform After the Installation of a New Range

A new range is an exciting purchase, one which will enhance cooking for years into the future. After a range is purchased and installed, there are some steps which a homeowner should perform before the use of their new range. Below are some of the steps a new range owner should do to obtain maximum benefits from their new appliance.

During the process of shopping for a new range, you may have a list of requirements. For example, some homeowners want to switch to gas, or from gas to electric. One of the things you may wish to do is to buy new cookware when you buy a new range if your old cookware isn’t compatible with the new unit.

It’s always a wise idea to have a professional install your range, mainly if it requires natural gas. An installer knows to look for damage which may have occurred in the warehouse and also knows how to install a range with an anti-tip bracket so it won’t tip over, for example, if a child climbs on the door.

Wipe it down

Wiping down your new range, inside and out, will give you the benefit of seeing every inch of it, and also ensures that if there are any packing materials left in it, you’ll find them during the cleaning process. Use a warm, sudsy rag and then wipe it dry. It will also give you an awareness of the basic construction of the unit, which you can use during the next step.

Read the instruction booklet

While it may seem simple enough to use, you’ll want to learn everything you can about your new range. For example, maybe it will surprise you to learn that the drawer beneath the oven is a warming drawer, and not merely a place to store your unused ovenware--although you can use it for that, as well. If your new range doesn’t come with an instruction booklet, you can often find one online.

Burn in

Before you use the oven, it’s essential to break it in. Breaking it in is a process which involves firing it up at high heat for a specified amount of time to burn off the stinky manufacturing chemical residue. You’ll know the temperature and the amount of time because you read the instruction booklet (previous step). When the process has been successful your new range won’t smell of chemicals any longer. You may want to turn on a fan and leave windows and doors open during the burning process.

Safety

Please keep children and pets away from a range when it’s in use.
